Youth, ages 15 and older, are welcomed each year to a Holy Week Retreat known as  "Pascua Juvenil" (Easter Youth).   (see link under traditions for the details on this year’s event)

A traditional Lenten experience in Mexico and other Spanish-speaking countries is the opportunity for people of different age groups to come together for a few days for spiritual growth.

Beginning in 2003, and each year since, our parish has been blessed with the opportunity to bring youth together in this manner. Under the direction of Deacon Luis Sanchez, materials are obtained from two dioceses of Jalisco, Mexico, a team is organized, and details are planned. Leaders of the Grupo Juvenil who meet throughout the year are closely involved with the planning and presenting of the retreat.

 .

The retreat begins the afternoon of Holy Thursday and ends about noon on Holy Saturday.

Parents and close relatives are involved in the final hours of the retreat. Also many parishioners (both Spanish- and English-speaking) provide prayer and other types of support.

.

Over the years the attendance has grown from 38 to almost 150 youth. In the past year the retreat has welcomed not only youth of the parish but from around the diocese. In 2006, youth came from Oshkosh, Omro, Appleton, Kaukauna, Newton, New London, Sheboygan and Michigan.

This Catholic tradition is celebrated in a similar manner in Mexico.  In the small towns, there are smaller seminars ... however in the larger Cities like Guadalajara, this ministry is conducted for a full 3 days and 2 nights.   Luis, through the help of the Diocese of Guadalajara, has now extended the tradition to families in Green Bay and the surrounding communities in Northeastern Wisconsin.

The theme varies each year, but always includes presentations, group activities, songs and prayer, reflection time, participation in the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday and in the Living Way of the Cross on Good Friday.

Luis' brother, Hector Sanchez, lives near Guadalajara Mexico in a town called Cuquio. Hector is very active in youth ministry and has provided the training materials with the help of the Diocese of Guadalajara.  Hector's assistance was instrumental in getting this program off the ground.

"There are many different ways to Pray" - Luis Sanchez

Luis became a full time member of the St Willebrords staff in 2002 and he is now able to work in the ministry that he enjoys.

Gracias Luis for keeping your traditions alive here in Green Bay!
