THE NORBERTINE FATHERS COME TO ST. WILLEBRORD The Norbertine Fathers were put in charge of St. Willebrord Parish in 1932 when Father Francis Xavier Exler was appointed pastor. Abbott Killeen, who served as one of Father Exler's assistants, recalled that when Father Exler was faced with a problem he'd talk it over with his assistants and ask himself, 'What would Jesus do?" "Father Exler said the sacraments were for the people, not people for the sacraments," stated Abbot Killeen. "These two priests, Father Van and Father Exler, made the difference between imposing, or being generous," continued Abbot Killeen. "In other parishes, people were isolated from the priests, but not with Father Van and Father Exler. They lived the Spirit, not the letter of the law. These two priests were my mentors."
