Shelter Meals
We
work very hard to provide nourishing meals each month to shelter residents as
well as other people who coming searching for a hot meal. We serve nearly 140 persons each time –
men, women, and children. If you are
interesting in forming a group of about 6-7 volunteers to provide a meal to
the shelter call us and we will get you started. This is a wonderful and enriching
ministry!
Alternative Gift
Giving
During
the Christmas seasons we provide people with the opportunity to give an “alternative
gift” to loved ones. Some years we work
with Alternative Gifts International to provide gifts for children of
under-privileged families. You
purchase items that will be given to families from all over the world. You choose the gift (ie a sheep, eye
glasses, medical vouchers, as well as the country to which it will go. More recently we have partnered with our
local Love Life program to help purchase items for young mothers and their
children. One weekend we provide a
list of items that they need, and people have the chance to make a donation
towards their purchase. In exchange,
the purchaser receives a card that they can give their loved ones to show how
a gift was given in their name.
Back to School
Each
year, from mid-July until early August we collect school supplies and
clothing in coordination with the Service League of Brown County.
Mission Possible
Through
the year we have collections for a period of time for a specific
organization’s needs. We have
collected items for the NEW Community Shelter, the St John the Evangelist
Homeless Shelter, the St Vincent de Paul House of Hope, Freedom House, Love
Life, Golden House, and have been a part of “Souper
Bowl” weekends and more. In each case
the collection benefits either a St Willebrord ministry, or for the needs of
social justice related organizations in the area.
Parish Pantry
Food
Donations for the Parish Pantry are gratefully accepted. We give away non-perishable food, household
products, and personal care items.
Cash donations are also greatly appreciated and are used to purchase
additional foodstuffs to give away
Political Issues
Offering
of letters to congress persons regarding political issues affecting our
community.
Giving Tree
Each year
we create of list of children from families in need of help with holiday
gifts. We get the name, age and size
of each child and create ornaments that are hung on our tree each
November. The goal is to provide at
least one toy and clothing gift for each child. The gifts are collected and sorted here,
and distributed to the families. Due
to the growing need here, the Giving Tree is restricted to families with an
affiliation to St Willebrord. Besides
the children’s gifts, a large assortment of household supplies and non-perishable
food and a Christmas ham is distributed, all shortly before Christmas. In the past 4 years we have averaged about
170 children.
