YOUTH
CONFIRMATION...usually
a young person who is a junior or senior in high school may begin preparation
for the sacrament of Confirmation if he/she has been attending religious
education classes in the previous years (Ideally, grades 1-10).
Confirmation is usually celebrated in spring with candidates from both the
youth and adult program. The
celebration is the only bi-lingual confirmation Mass in the diocese. The
preparation program begins in fall and consists of a retreat, several service
projects and classes. Each confirmation candidate needs to choose a sponsor
who is a confirmed, practicing Catholic.

ADULT CONFIRMATION...there
are two types of preparation available:

1) If an adult attended religious
education as a child, but opted not to receive Confirmation in high school,
he/she is able to attend the Adult Confirmation classes which generally begin
in fall. Confirmation is celebrated with the youth candidates.
2) If an adult has had very little religious formation as a child or youth
(generally, nothing after First Communion), she/he is welcomed to join the
RCIA group (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). This is a more in-depth
study of the basic beliefs of the Catholic Church and an opportunity to
become more comfortable with the community and its practices. Sessions
usually begin late summer or early fall and conclude with the celebration of
the sacrament at the Easter Vigil with other adults who may be preparing for
baptism, Communion or profession of faith as a Catholic. The setting is one
in which adults can dialog and ask questions that will enable them
to feel more at home in the Catholic community.
