In the month of December
in
the year 1531, an Indian
convert to Christianity who
had been baptized Juan Diego
received four visits from the
Virgin Mary. During these
apparitions, which occurred on
Tepeyac Hill, Our Lady told
Juan Diego that she wanted a
church to be built in her
honor on that hill.
Juan Diego went to the
bishop's residence to report
the apparitions, but he was
not believed - until after Our
Lady's fourth visit. On that
occasion, when Juan Diego
opened his cloak in front of
the bishop, an image of the
Virgin miraculously appeared.
This original image is the one
that is still venerated in the
Guadalupe Basilica in
northern Mexico City.

En el mes de diciembre de
1531, un indio
cristianizado,
bautizado con el nombre
de
Juan Diego, recibió cuatro
visitas de la Virgen María.
Durante estas apariciones,
mismas que tuvieron lugar en
el Cerro del Tepeyac, Nuestra
Señora le pidió a Juan
Diego
que se le erigiera un templo
sobre ese cerro.
Juan Diego quiso reportar
las
apariciones al prelado en
el
palacio del obispo de aquel
lugar, pero no se le creyó
hasta después de la cuarta
visita de Nuestra Señora. En
aquella ocasión, al abrir su
"tilma" (una especie de capa
o manto) frente al obispo,
apareció milagrosamente una
imagen de la Virgen.
Esta
imagen original es la que aún
se venera en la Basílica
de
Guadalupe, al norte de la
Ciudad de México.
